We know it can be hard to maintain the habit of reading when daily life is so busy. For those of you experiencing a reading slump and want to get back into the habit, here are a few tips from us at the library.

Sign up to the library or renew your membership (if it's expired). Obviously you can borrow books, magazines and use our resources for free as a member. We're also fine-free, which means you won't be fined for going overdue (unless an item is damaged or assumed lost). And best of all for getting back into reading is talking to our book-loving staff who are happy to give you recommendations without judgement.

Don't underestimate the power of browsing. Visiting a library (or bookstore) and slowly browsing the themed displays and shelves can be a great way of finding out what kind of books you're drawn to and building your 'to read' list. Each of our libraries has different displays that we change regularly, including 'recently returned' items that librarians or other patrons have been reading. If there's a particular genre you love, we also have genre labels on our books to make finding your next read easier for you.

Try reading a graphic novel or comic. Graphic novels offer a rich reading experience due to their mix of illustrations and dialogue and can be easier to get into than a standard book. We have a wide range of graphic novels available for adults and children. In addition to our physical items on the shelves, we also have options for reading on digital devices. Our ComicsPlus subscription has a comprehensive range of comics, graphic novels and manga for adults and children. You can also find comics on the Libby or Borrowbox apps.

Audiobooks count as reading too. If you find yourself getting easily distracted or can't find the time to read a book in the traditional way, try listening to an Audiobook. We have a great selection available via our Libby and Borrowbox apps

Join a book club. The social nature of a book club can really help cement your reading habit. Discuss what you've been reading, find out about other people's reading habits, and get lots of new recommendations from fellow book club members. We have informal book clubs taking place every month at Frankton, Queenstown and Wānaka libraries - we'd love to see you there!

And most of all, remember to have fun on your reading journey!
